Your safety is paramount to the San Juan Capistrano Swallows Day Parade
Board of Directors and volunteers.
Stay Safe at the San Juan CapistranoSwallows Day Parade
Large-scale events face unique security challenges, from cyber threats to physical safety concerns. The Fiesta Association actively plans for a wide spectrum of risks, and respond to threats in real time.
Stay aware of your surroundings
Always know how you want to exit quickly if there is an emergency and don’t be shy about approaching a Fiesta volunteer in a Black and White Fiesta outfit a Security Official or a OC Sheriff Deputy if you see something suspicious. Below are some public safety threats that can occur at large community events like the Swallows Day Parade and Events. We urge you to stay vigilant!
Unattended Bags or Backpacks
If you see any bags or backpacks that appear to be abandoned, please contact Security Personel, a Fiesta Member or an OC Sheriff Deputy and notify them of the situation. Unattended bags or backpacks may contain dangerous materials and should be reported immediately.
Pickpockets and Theft
Pickpockets thrive in large crowds. Keep purses secured in front of you with a strap over the shoulder. Use your front pockets instead of back pockets for your phone, money, and other valuables. If you witness a theft, take in as much detail about the perpetrator as much as possible and immediately notify Security Personnel, a Fiesta Member or an OC Sheriff Deputy.
Cyberterrorism
Cyberterrorism is one of the fastest-growing threats to our financial safety. When withdrawing money from the ATM, go with a friend or family member who can stand behind you to keep others from seeing you punch in your PIN. Make sure to take your card and receipt with you.
Active Shooter
If you see or hear an active shooter on the event site, run away from the threat. Leave your belongings behind. Keep your hands visible. Don’t try to move anyone who might be wounded. OC Sheriffs will be on the scene immediately. Remain calm and follow instructions. Avoid quick movements toward officers and avoid pointing, screaming or yelling. Don’t ask questions, just evacuate the area.
Be Careful Around Horses
Horses generally weigh over 1,000 pounds and can panic and run without notice. They can also kick with incredible power. Never go behind a horse with less than eight feet between the horse and you. When in front of horses, don’t make any wild motions that can startle the horse. Always remain aware of your surroundings when around horses. And most important, do not touch any horse without permission.
